6th Street Donations

WHO WE ARE

6th Street Playhouse is a non-profit Community Theater celebrating its 50th year in Santa Rosa.

Our mission? To engage, inspire, and educate our diverse community through 3 primary initiatives – 6th Street Playhouse, 6th Street Studio and LIVE@6thStreet

We are proud to announce that we have secured a loan to purchase our historic building! Now we need your help to maintain our promise to our community and the performing arts in the North Bay.

Read on to see how your donation will benefit our educational and entertaining program for years to come.

WHAT WE DO

6th Street Playhouse

Professionally staged shows curated and overseen by our Artistic Director. The Playhouse presents classic and contemporary plays and musicals on both of our stages. Our larger stage, The GK Hardt Theater, is for primarily large-cast musicals, while the Monroe Stage presents unique, small cast plays and musicals. Our actors and crew are drawn from the local community and beyond.

6th Street Studio

Education programs for youth and adults, managed and overseen by our Education Director. These programs help our students grow their social, creative and communication skills. From smaller versions of Broadway shows (with performances) to skills-based classes, we offer a wide selection of classes for all ages.

Did you know? 6th Street Playhouse has received the City of Santa Rosa Award for Cultural Enrichment and the Sonoma County Historical Society Award for Preservation of a Historical Building. The playhouse has won the Press Democrat’s Best Theater Company award seven out of the last eight years.

WHO WE SERVE

6th Street Playhouse (Mainstage) has a dedicated base of subscribers and repeat patrons drawing from across Sonoma County, with 50% coming from Santa Rosa, 35% from other towns in Sonoma County, and 15% from throughout (and beyond!) the Bay Area. The mainstage season generally brings in 15,000 to 20,000 unique patrons each year. The demographics for our productions vary, with main stage large musicals drawing an older audience, and our performance series attracting a younger crowd.

6th Street Studio serves children and adults in education programs. The “Camps” are multi-week all-day programs culminating in a staged production. They are presented across all four seasons. The programs (after-school and on-site) engage over 600 students, and with parents and family engage over 2000 individuals.

The demographics skew to younger families.

WHERE WE ARE

6th Street Playhouse is located in downtown Santa Rosa, the largest city in Sonoma County . It’s an easy walk to the restaurants and shops of the Railroad Square Historic District, and easily accessible from the 101 and walking distance to the SMART train.

The Playhouse occupies the oldest surviving brick cannery building in Santa Rosa. This historic structure survived the 1906 earthquake. The theater leased the property in 2004 and invested over $1.5 million to create

  • GK Hardt Theater: 184-seat “mainstage” theater
  • Monroe Stage: 99-seat, intimate theater space
  • Rehearsal and classroom spaces
  • Costume shop and offices

WHERE WE ARE GOING

On the last day of 2021, the theater purchased the property. With the purchase, the theater now has the opportunity to develop almost two acres of the lot, and to continue to improve the 22,000 SF cannery structure. Approximately eight acres contiguous to the parcel have approved development plans for housing.

  • Create The Railroad Square Performing Arts Center
  • Outdoor Stage and event space
  • Improved parking
  • Potential affordable housing for artists
