It's Black History Month

We honor our Black friends, family, colleagues and fellow theater lovers not only this month, but every month of the year.  Black history is our history and should be embraced, acknowledged and celebrated.  We are happy to provide you with some resources to learn more about Black History on the stage and to inspire you.

Dr. Nelson Mandela

“A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”

Dr. Mae Jemison

“Never limit yourself because of others’ limited imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.”

Stacey Abrams

We must use words to uplift and include. We can use our words to fight back against oppression and hate. But we must also channel our words into action.

A Message from Artistic Director, Jared Sakren

We here at The Playhouse are working very hard to plan a full season of great plays starting in the Fall of 2021.  We will be presenting the very best selection of productions that will thrill you, move you, entertain you and make you think— doing all the great things that only live theatre can do.
We appreciate your continued support and patience as we navigate through these challenging times, and we have your health and safety at the forefront of our concerns. When you return to the Playhouse we will ensure you will not have to worry about the safety or health of our spaces.  In the meantime, we will roll out the new season sometime in February. I think you will all be very excited by it, and that you’ll want to secure your tickets right away to all these great shows!  Thank you all again for being such passionate and loyal supporters of The Playhouse.  I cannot tell you how gratifying it is to know how important we are to you and our community!

Community Outreach

At 6th Street Playhouse, we are constantly striving to engage members of the community, to foster meaningful communication and a continued love of theater. In that light, we are currently working on the following initiatives for 2021:
Let’s talk theatre!A new online talk show with our hosts Patrick Varner and Rodney Fierce. In each episode, we will invite a member of our community and a professional actor to talk about issues that are of interest to us all. Follow us on Facebook to be reminded of upcoming episodes!
Workshops of new pieces written and performed by local artists.
We are thrilled to collaborate with our first New Works Artist, Gamal Chasten!
Partnerships with other local organizations to serve our youth with stellar educational programming and opportunities for leadership.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

6th Street Playhouse joins the voices in our community and country who condemn hatred, violence, and racial injustice...

The Arts are a place where our community can come to hear messages that bring us together, that unite us, that form a common bond with all humanity, and it is as artists that we can help shape the world we live in. We will not stand with those who would turn us against each other, nor will we condone the unjust treatment of anyone because of the color of their skin, their ethnicity, or their background. Our theatre dedicates itself to ensuring that all people are welcome inside our doors, and, when we are allowed to resume activities, in every activity we conduct — be it classes, performances, rehearsals, in our staffing, our board and volunteers — we will assure inclusivity and diversity at all levels.
