Real Women Have Curves
Monroe Stage
by Josefina López
directed by Marie Ramirez Downing
Starring Alexa Jimenez, Reilly Milton, Bethany Regan, Rosa Reynoza and Anakarina Swanson
The story is set in a small sewing factory in East Los Angeles, owned by a 34-year-old undocumented immigrant in danger of losing her sewing equipment, as she struggles to make the payments and avoid deportation.
You’ll get to know five very different Latinas who toil together to try to save the shop, and their jobs. To get through the grueling work they daydream and share stories of living in the shadows, impossible menfolk, fear of that knock on the door, never enough money, gender roles and body image. They also laugh. And you will too.
The playwright credits the play’s recent resurgence to its comedy. “It deals with a difficult topic in a way that audiences can handle without turning away,” notes López, who worked in such a factory as an undocumented 17-year-old.
