6th Street Playhouse is seeking an experienced and versatile individual to fill the position of Technical Director.
Reports to: Executive Artistic Director
Hours: Full-time (40 hours); flexible schedule with many nights and weekends
Preferred Start Date: August 1st, 2024, flexible

6th Street Playhouse is a performing arts organization that has been producing live theatre and providing education programs of the highest quality since 2006. The Playhouse is the central hub of the Sonoma County arts scene. It has been named by the Press Democrat the Best Live Theatre in Sonoma County for eight consecutive years. The Playhouse has two venues: the 184-seat proscenium GK Hardt Theater and the 99-seat intimate Monroe Stage. It is located at 52 W 6th Street, Santa Rosa, California.
Position Summary:
The Technical Director is primarily responsible for supervision and implementation of all production elements. They are responsible for creating a safe working environment, as well as coordinating facilitates repairs and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment. The ideal candidate will possess skills in multiple creative technical disciplines, a self-starter work ethic, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and a collaborative spirit comfortable with communicating between artistic parties, as well as staff and volunteers.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure a safe working environment for all personnel
- Collaborate with both the Executive Director and Production Manager to create production budgets and establish timetables for builds.
- Collaborate with scenic, lighting, props, and sound designers to realize their visions within our established budgets, as well oversee installation.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and plots, supplementing design work as needed
- Build and install all scenery, including painting the set and deck.
- Ability and flexibility to work on evenings & weekends in addition to normal business hours
- Attend all technical rehearsals and resolve issues and notes as necessary
- Attend production meetings to confer with creative teams to realize and achieve designs
- Hire, train, and supervise technical crews, as well as work study students, in production builds, including sound and lighting installations
- Manage technical operations budget; maintain inventory, and purchase and obtain supplies for all production builds and maintenance during show runs
- Purchase, lease, and/or borrow equipment as needed, according to the budget
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience.
- Valid California Driver’s License
- Minimum of two years' experience in scenery construction, theatre project management, and budgeting in a collegiate or professional environment
- Experience in using standard and specialized scenic carpentry tools
- Experience with computer assisted drafting programs.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving and organizational skills
