6th Street Playhouse Will Open Marjorie Prime March 13, 2026

If You Could Talk to the Ones You Lost… Would You?

SANTA ROSA, CA (February 11, 2026) – As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes how we live, remember, and connect, Marjorie Prime feels more timely than ever. The haunting and deeply human play blends speculative technology with intimate family drama, following Marjorie, an 85-year-old widow facing memory loss, whose family introduces her to a “Prime”—a holographic recreation of her late husband, programmed to preserve and repeat the stories of their shared life. Directed by John Browning, the production features two casts of seasoned actors, including Tamar Cohn and Laura Jorgensen alternating in the title role. Written by Jordan Harrison, Marjorie Prime was nominated for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and recently concluded a star-studded Broadway run. The production opens Friday, March 13, and runs through March 29, 2026, on the Monroe Stage.

“A provocative and chilling family drama that packs a punch.” – Entertainment Weekly

At its heart, Marjorie Prime is a story about memory—how it defines us, how it fades, and how far we’ll go to preserve it. As Marjorie’s “Prime” fills in the gaps left by her failing memory, the play asks timely questions about truth, comfort, and who gets to decide which stories survive. Though set in the not-so-distant future and rooted in advanced technology, the play remains deeply intimate and grounded in familiar family relationships.

Playwright Jordan Harrison (The Grown Up) is known for exploring the intersection of technology and human connection with warmth and compassion. His writing avoids dystopian extremes, instead focusing on how innovation quietly reshapes everyday lives. In Marjorie Prime, that approach results in a story that feels both startlingly current and emotionally resonant.

After premiering at Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, Marjorie Prime moved Off-Broadway and then to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre in 2015, where Lois Smith won a Tony Award for her performance as Marjorie. The play has since been produced worldwide and continues to feel increasingly relevant as conversations about artificial intelligence and memory move from theory to reality. Its current Broadway run stars June Squibb, Cynthia Nixon, Danny Burstein, and Christopher Lowell. The 2017 film, written and directed by Michael Almereyda, premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival with Lois Smith reprising the titular role and Jon Hamm, Geena Davis and Tim Robbins in the principal roles.
