“Fast-paced and uproariously funny, Clyde’s is a spicy feast for the senses.” —Chicago Sun-Times
“Clydes does an amazing job addressing that people can change for the better, that the past does not have to define who a person is…” —Brooke Leigh Howard, The Daily Beast.
Sometimes making a sandwich is about more than making a sandwich. For the kitchen staff at Clyde’s, a roadside sandwich shop, it is their catalyst for self-discovery, finding self-confidence and self-forgiveness.
6th Street Playhouse presents two-time Pulitzer Prize-Winning Dramatist, Lynn Nottage’s Tony-nominated, darkly comedic play about formerly incarcerated individuals breaking free from the shackles of their history.

The Story
Clyde’s is set in a Pennsylvania truck-stop sandwich shop owned by the domineering and often cruel namesake who employs formerly incarcerated individuals trying to rebuild their lives. The kitchen is both a battleground and a sanctuary for the staff, each bringing their struggles, aspirations, and longing for growth to the workplace.
Montrellous is a philosophical and kind mentor who dreams of creating the perfect sandwich; Rafael is a good-natured dreamer who longs for love and self-worth; Letitia is a tough yet hopeful single mother struggling to provide for her daughter; and the newest hire, Jason, is a guarded ex-con with a troubled past grappling with the effects of prejudice.
Clyde, powerful and intimidating, wields her authority ruthlessly, exploiting her workers’ vulnerabilities and constantly reminding them of their precarious positions. She discourages ambition and creativity, keeping them focused on churning out standard sandwiches rather than dreaming of something greater.
As the employees grow more confident and united, Clyde becomes more antagonistic and determined to crush their optimism. She taunts and belittles them, testing their resilience and commitment to their newfound sense of purpose. Clyde may be a devil of a boss, but the workers discover purpose in their lives as they find themselves banding together – and sharing a quest to create the perfect sandwich.
