6th Street Playhouse Studio Presents Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka KIDS!

Date: October 10, 2023
The Studio kicks off its Fall 2023 round of performances with a limited 6-show run of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka KIDS. This delicious one-act musical is based on the classic children’s tale Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and is certain to delight audiences of all ages with its peppy score and hilarious script!
Adapted for the stage by Timothy Allen McDonald and Leslie Bricusse, with music and lyrics by Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the story follows Charlie Bucket, a likeable, lucky young lad who happens to find one of five coveted golden tickets in a chocolate bar. The tickets have been placed there by the enigmatic candymaker Willy Wonka, who has stipulated that whoever finds them shall be granted a free tour of his factory…as well as a lifetime supply of chocolate.
The four other ticket winners—Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, and Mike Teavee—are mean, selfish, spoiled children, each with a different bad habit that makes them all equally insufferable. But Charlie and his grandfather are different: kind, patient, amiable. As the tour wears on, they watch as the other winners face challenges within the factory designed to break them of their horrible manners. Will the kids learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules? Or will they be forced to suffer the consequences of their behavior?
Willy Wonka KIDS is performed by the 6th Street Studio’s Youth Players, a group of 43 young actors between the ages of 7 and 12 who portray all the roles in this production. The show also features musical performances from an ensemble of Tiny Players (ages 5-7), and weekend matinee performances will also benefit from a pre-show showcase presented by the Preschool Players (ages 3-5).
This is the first production in the Studio’s 2023-24 season, and it is also the first Studio show led by the Playhouse’s Director of Education and Community Outreach, Jonathen Blue. Both the director and choreographer for this show, Blue is a seasoned youth instructor, teacher, and performer with over 15 years of experience under his belt. He is joined by the teaching team of Armando Ramos (Music Director), Erika Spears (Assistant Director), Jonni Machado (Assistant Director), Katie Foster (Tiny Players Director), Alyson Young (Stage Manager), Sawyer Miller (Student Assistant Director), Sierra Downey (Preschool Players Director), and many wonderful volunteers.
