6th Street Playhouse Is Going Classic for the Holidays
Irving Berlin’s White Christmas to Open November 22

Paramount Pictures released its box office smash hit ‘White Christmas’ seventy years ago – and it’s still a family favorite. This holiday season, 6th Street Playhouse brings Paul Blake and David Ives’ stage adaptation of the film to life on the GK Hardt stage. Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, with its big production numbers, is a perfectly uplifting, old-fashioned musical everyone will enjoy. Twenty-five classic Irving Berlin songs help tell the story of two musical stars who team up with a sister act in Vermont and attempt to rescue their former Army commander’s failing country inn. White Christmas stars Trevor Hoffmann (Singin’ in the Rain) as Bob Wallace, David Bradbury (Elf) as Phil Davis, Ella Park (LIZZIE) as Betty Haynes and Caroline Flett (The Merry Widow) as her sister, Judy Haynes. Joseph Favalora (Kinky Boots) returns as choreographer for this dance-heavy production and co-directs with Megan Bartlett (LIZZIE). Janis Dunson Wilson is the music director and conducts/leads the live 6-piece band. Irving Berlin’s White Christmas opens on Friday, November 22, and runs through Sunday, December 22, 2024.

“A holiday extravaganza that captures the spirit of the season in every way.”
– The New York Times

Paul Blake and David Ives successfully transferred the 1954 musical film written by Norman Krasna, Norman Panama and Melvin Frank to the stage, adding 20 Berlin songs to the fast-paced and uplifting story. Favorites include “White Christmas,” “The Best Things Happen When You’re Dancing” and “I Got My Love to Keep me Warm.” Big production numbers include “Blue Skies” and “I Love a Piano.”

Joseph Favalora has previously choreographed Irving Berlin’s White Christmas three times. “I have honed and tweaked the choreography to fit the genre and nostalgia of the film,” he said. One nostalgic feature of this production is tap dancing, a genre that comes in waves of popularity, and one not every performer knows these days. Favalora is good at training actors/singers to quickly excel at tap so they can confidently focus on the other elements of their performances. He began training the performers a month before rehearsals began in special tap classes.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas premiered in St. Louis in 2000 and then opened in San Francisco in 2004 before playing on Broadway during the winter of 2008 – 2009. It received multiple 2009 Tony and Drama Desk nominations.
