LIZZIE: The Musical
SANTA ROSA, CA (Sept 12, 2024) – Halloween starts early at 6th Street Playhouse with LIZZIE: The Musical. In 1892, Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmother. Based on historical records and told by a killer all-female cast through a searing rock score, this show is a declaration of strength and survivorship that explores the heated days leading up to the murder and Lizzie’s controversial acquittal. It’s like Sweeny Todd meets Rocky Horror, and was inspired by the Riot Grrrl movement and music. This production is directed by Pat Nims (Kinky Boots), music directed by Dr. Christina Howell (The Prom) and choreographed by Jonathan Blue (The Hello Girls). Because this is such a unique and juicy musical, Lizzie has been double-cast to allow more actors, including Shannon Rider (Always, Patsy Cline) to perform the roles. For that reason LIZZIE opens twice in the GK Hardt Theater; on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Lizzie Borden, her sister Emma, her BFF (with benefits) Alice and her housekeeper Bridget front a live 6-piece band in this exploration of one possible reason why she might have done it. If she did it.
“It’s exciting to hear the inner dialogue expressed through modern rock,” said Nims. “Through the lens of modern feminism in juxtaposition to the literal, mental, physical and legal constraints experienced by Victorian women.”
LIZZIE’s music was written by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt, with lyrics by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Tim Maner and book by Tim Maner. The full-length two-act musical premiered at the Living Theatre in 2009, was named in The Advocate’s Top Ten of 2009 and was nominated for three Drama Desk Awards.
