The Pirates of Penzance Drops Anchor at 6th Street Playhouse
A Pirate Adventure the Whole Family Will Love Opens May 23!
SANTA ROSA, CA (April 21, 2025) – Prepare to experience joy! 6th Street Playhouse is closing its season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved and timeless operetta, The Pirates of Penzance. This pirate romp, featuring an effervescent and satirical score, will appeal to the child in everyone. The love story between Frederic, a young pirate apprentice, and Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General, is packed with clever hilarity, heart, high notes and some of Sonoma County’s best performers. Direction and choreography are by Jonathen Blue and Emily Lynn Cornelius, with music direction by Les Pfutzenreuter. The production runs May 23 through June 21, 2025 in the GK Hardt Theater.
On his 21st birthday, Frederic plans to leave behind his apprenticeship with a band of tenderhearted pirates in search of a respectable life—though the Pirate King insists piracy is more honest than respectability. Frederic falls for the spirited Mabel, the only one of a group of young women he meets on the Cornish coast who is willing to help him start fresh. But when the pirates want claim the other women as brides, Mabel’s father—the famously fast-talking Major-General—outwits them with an invented sob story. Just when order seems restored, a twist reveals that Frederic, born on February 29, is technically still a child. With duty, love, and logic at odds, the absurd tale unfolds in a whirlwind of swashbuckling fun, clever wordplay and catchy tunes.
Music Director Les Pfutzenreuter leads a 7-piece orchestra, and audiences can expect classic songs like “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” “Poor Wand’ring One,” and “Climbing Over Rocky Mountains.”
“The Pirates of Penzance is certainly the silliest, and my favorite, of Gilbert and Sullivan’s shows. I find the music to be rousing, carrying the story forward, but there are also some very tender moments,“ said Pfutzenreuter. “I am really loving working with the production team and all of the staff at 6th Street Playhouse, and we have an incredible cast!
Two dynamic casts of local favorites and rising stars will bring 6th Street’s production of The Pirates of Penzance to life. The chorus, which plays a predominant role with individual characters within the ensembles, will remain the same for both casts, with lead roles individually cast into the “Skull Cast” and the “Bones Cast.”
